Matt Learned
Matt Learned is a Native American artist enrolled in the Cheyenne and Arapahoe Tribe of Oklahoma. He was born in Kansas, but grew up in Oklahoma City. He is the fifth child, of ten, born to Mr. and Mrs. John and Juanita Learned, with brother Brent Learned being the youngest brother at number eight. Matt Learned graduated from Northwest Classen High school in 1981, and attended the University of Kansas where he graduated from the School of Art with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts (BFA) in 1988. Learned has been a professional artist for years. His works have been shown and won awards at various art shows and competitions, including The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art where he placed first in both painting and sculpture in 2003. Learned and his brother Brent had the honor of working with Dale Chihuly's team on Eleanor Blake Kirkpatrick Memorial Tower, Chihuly's tallest installation to date, at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Learned also served on the Lenexa Art Council in Lenexa, Kansas. He loves to paint and draw when he has spare time. Learned was married to Jill Peters, who passed away in 2020, and is honoring her memory with his art. His father, John W. Learned was a renowned artist, specializing in Remington-style bronze sculptures created in his own studio by the lost-wax method.
